Where to stay in Tuscany without a car
The best bases to move around in Tuscany without a car are definitely the central cities or located along the railway line between Florence-Pisa, Florence-Lucca, Florence-Arezzo or Florence-Siena that will make your travels easier and allow you to reach the most places in Tuscany.
Florence is well served by trains and buses and from here you can reach and visit the cities of Siena, San Gimignano , Lucca and Arezzo in one or half day. To reach the geographical area of Chianti instead, the best choice is to rely on a guided tour. Visiting this area by public transportation could in fact be an adventure, because although the major centers are well connected, the smaller and more characteristic could be tiring to be reached without private means.
Another good base for visiting Tuscany without a car is Siena , from where you can reach the southernmost areas such as the Val d'Orcia and the Maremma , whose countries are well connected to the main cities of Tuscany by train or by bus. From Siena, by public transport you can reach Rapolano Terme, San Gimignano, Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza, Pisa and Florence. There are no train connections with the main towns of the Val d'Orcia, whose nearest stations are Buonconvento and Chiusi, on the Siena railway line. Grosseto station is located along the Tyrrhenian railway line and offers both extra-urban connections to and from Florence and Siena and urban to the main towns of the Maremma.
Where to stay in Chianti without a car
If your idea is to stay right in Chianti and to use buses or trains, we recommend a good dose of patience. The schedules, the frequency and the itineraries of the races could be put to the test, but on the other hand your holiday will be fully in line with the slow philosophy. With this premise, based on your itinerary we suggest you book a Farm in the town of Castellina in Chianti or Poggibonsi , unique two train stations of the Chianti area reachable from Florence and Siena and from which you can reach the other localities of this area through a service of buses. Buses leave from Florence train station and stop in major and minor centers of Chianti such as Greve, Radda, Castellina and Gaiole in Chianti .
