Where to go on a ski and snow holiday in Italy

From the north to the south of Italy, from the Dolomites to Mount Etna, Italy has a huge range of destinations for skiing holidays , here ski resorts are immersed in beautiful natural settings, with modern and equipped facilities and the opportunity of practicing unusual skiing activities: snowshoeing, ice-skating or horse-drawn sleigh rides. Holidays in the snow in Northern Italy

One of the biggest ski destinations is the Dolomiti Superski , located in the area of Trento, Bolzano and Belluno , between Trentino Alto Adige and Veneto, including  12 ski resorts giving access to a total of 1,200 km of slopes in a fairytale landscape, connected by 460 ski lifts in a single skipass. The ski areas of the Dolomiti Superski include also Cortina d'Ampezzo, Alta Badia, Val Gardena - Alpe di Siusi, Val di Fassa - Carezza, Arabba-Marmolada, Val di Fiemme and San Martino di Castrozza.

Also Veneto is a leading region of Italian skiing and an excellent destination for ski-sno holidays. Among the ski resorts we pride Cortina d'Ampezzo , a prestigious international tourist destination where the World Cup races are held yearly and is famous for its slopes quality and variety and for shopping and nightlife.

As for ski holidays in Lombardy, the most beautiful ski resorts are located in Valtellina , in the province of Sondrio , possessing a district of world-class locations. Bormio is in the heart of the Stelvio National Park , one of the most famous ski resorts in Italy, thanks also to the World Cup downhill races on the Stelvio slope, going down from 3,000 to 1,200 metres: it is surely a benchmark for ski Alpine skiing, but also a popular destination for downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding, Nordic skiing, ski mountaineering and skicross and for its well-known snow park. Do not miss a relaxing afternoon at the Terme di Bormio . Livigno is a well-known ski resort located on a plateau in the heart of the Rhaetian Alps with 115 km of slopes and 32 modern lifts. Aprica is one of the most famous ski resorts in Lombardy with 50 km of excellent slopes served by 20 lifts.

Ski holidays: Tuscan-Emilian Apennines and Tuscany

Further in the south, there is the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. which include ski resorts such as Cimone, Abetone and other ski resorts in Tuscany.
The Cimone ski zone, provided with 50 kms of slopes and 22 lifts, is the largest snow park in Emilia Romagna and one of the best equipped in the whole Apennines, its slopes are suitable for any levels and  loved by snowborder for off-piste trails especially equipped for children and families, with babypark, ski school and easy trails.

The Abetone , in the province of Pistoia in Tuscany is one of the best ski resorts in the Apennines. Here, in the four valleys sports enthusiasts have the opportunity of 45 kms of trails for downhill skiing with 21 lifts, suitable for both expert skiers and families with children. Also here you can hike with snowshoes and Nordic walking routes into  the snowy woods.

Still in Tuscany, Monte Amiata is the ski resort in the province of Siena , in the municipality of Abbadia San Salvatore and Castel del Piano in the province of Grosseto. You can enjoy a wonderful view of the Sienese hills and the Maremma from its peak. The Amiata is an ancient volcano covered by the most extensive beech forest in Europe and 10 kms trails for downhill skiing and 4 rings of 10.5 kms for Nordic skiing, a snowpark and a bobsleigh track. Moreover, not far away from here you can go to  Terme di San Filippo .

Careggine , in the province of Lucca , is one of the 3 mini-ski areas of the Garfagnana , suitable for those who take their first steps on the snow and want tranquillity. It stands on the slopes of Mount Sumbra, in front of the artificial lake of Vagli, on the eastern side of the Apuan Alps, where 3 ski lifts serve a 7 km- trailes with excellent ski-schools and technical tracks for more expert skiers.

Holidays in the snow in Sicily: skiing on the Mount Etna

Finally,  the Mount Etna in the province of Catania stands as an unusual Italian ski destination. The famous Sicilian volcano and its 3,350 meters of altitude is often covered with snow in winter and offers up to 1.400 meters of altitude two ski resorts and many itineraries of ski mountaineering . Skiing on Etna, facing the sea,  the contrast between the whiteness of the snow and the black lava rock is a fascinating and unique experience to see.
The ski areas of Etna are Nicolosi on the south side and Piano Provenzana-Linguaglossa on the north side. The slope of Nicolosi reaches up to 2,700 meters in Montagno and offers 3 red slopes (Intermediate trial for more confident skiers and snowboarders) and one blue (easy and usually not very steep trail)  for alpine skiing. The Piano-Provenzana-Linguaglossa area offers 4 red and 2 blue slopes and the magnificient view on the Ionian Sea.
