Agriculture and Farm Products

The farmhouse is the typical example of an ancient Tuscan farm: villa, dependances, barns and winery constitute the farm center. Several country-houses, originally used by farm workers, are located a few hundred meters far. All around fields are cultivated with grapes, olives, wheat, barley, sunflowers, legumes and fodder crops.

WINE: Sangiovese, Italian red grape variety, covers the largest share of our vineyards. This variety represents the heart of the Chianti wine. In addition, we cultivate some Tuscan varieties (Canaiolo, Colorino, Malvasia), as well as international ones (Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon). Our DOCG and IGT wines come from those grapes. During the harvest the farm center becomes an intense work place, while the air fills with the smell of must. Share with us this wonderful period by visiting Mensanello between September and October.

EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL: Frantoio, Leccino Moraiolo and Pendolino: those are the variety of olive trees we cultivate. Once harvested olives are brought in our mill within 24 hours in order to obtain a top-quality extra virgin olive oil. Olive groves are managed in a conservative and extensive way to maintain the natural fertility of soils.

BREEDING: Inside our woodland several pigs are raised in the wild. Our animals are then able to feed on their own, scavenging acorns, roots and tubers. This kind of breeding guarantee to produce a very tasty meat, with a soft and flavorful fat. Try it!

BEER: In the microbrewery we installed in Mensanello we produce craft beers, using our water and our barley. Three different beer styles are currently produced: an easy-to-drink Pale Ale, a refreshing Dunkelweizen, and a dark amber, American Brown Ale, pleasantly bittered with US hops.

“We did a cooking class with Gloria and had a wonderful time. I took home multiple recipes with detailed but easy instructions. We laughed and thoroughly enjoyed it all. We also did a tour of the village and grounds. Our host - I don’t want to misspell his name- did an excellent job and provided very detailed information about what they do to care for the land/vineyards and how they make the wine. It was educational and one of the best wine tours I have ever had (I also live in Northern California close to Sonoma/Napa). The pool was perfect - clean and refreshing on the days that were above 30 Celsius.”
