Things to do
Visiting the Val di Chiana means getting in tune with the history, the legend and the mystery (the Etruscan civilization that innervates the whole territory), relax in the thermal and "miraculous" waters of Chianciano Terme, Montepulciano and San Casciano dei Bagni or , enjoy the great wines of Montepulciano, the gastronomic offerings of Sinalunga with a delicacy of the highest lineage, the extra virgin olive oil of Trequanda, immerse yourself in the beauty of the landscape and architecture.
Exploring Sarteano, Torrita di Siena and the aristocratic rurality of Cetona you will discover the naturalness of the Chiusi oasis, the severity of Monte Cetona and the harmony of life which is the characteristic feature of this area, rich in ancient testimonies. The villages and towns of the Val di Chiana, seem to be arranged according to a precise, almost mathematical scheme, which sees them placed at five kilometers, or a little more, from one another.
There is just time to recover from the excitement of what we have just seen in this or that town, which we are faced with the pure lines of another cathedral or another square.
We will find the Beauty, in its most absolute meaning, in Piazza Baldini, in Chiusi; or in Sarteano, where the famous Annunciation by Beccafumi awaits you, humble as splendid, in the small church of S. Martino; and then to Chianciano Terme, continuing up to Montepulciano, called the pearl of the '500, which houses the works of Renaissance architects such as Michelozzo, Sangallo and Peruzzi, who have lavished their talent on civil and religious buildings of incredible elegance.
A little further north, we find Torrita di Siena, with a historic center that is a veritable labyrinth of neat alleys, which go to the squares where time seems to have stopped; and a little further on, perched on a hill, Montefollonico, with its medieval village for a journey back in the centuries.
Going into the hills: here is Trequanda, with its narrow streets, the little square and that Church with a façade that looks like a beautiful stone chessboard. Sinalunga is further to the east, dominating the entire valley; the ancient village, silent and rich in history, is worth a visit to discover its thousands of treasures.
The civilization of a people does not only manifest itself through painting, literature or music, but also, through the culture of good food.
Tuscany, but even more Val di Chiana, means extra virgin olive oil, derived from olives still picked by hand, with a very sapid and fruity taste; it means pecorino cheese made from pure sheep's milk grown outdoors on the hills, it means Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, the first wine that could boast the DOCG denomination, and the Bianco Vergine Valdichiana wine, with a fruity taste of Golden apple, wisteria and scent of tropical fruit.
As for the meat, we have to open a separate discussion: we are indeed talking about Chianina beef, the one from which the gigantic Florentine steaks are drawn, to be cooked strictly on the grill.
