EXCURSIONS
On foot, on horseback or by bicycle
The village of Sarteano 1307 is the starting point for several marked routes for both walking and riding (Monte Cetona 1148 m. is roughly one and half hours walk).
Route: take the road to the right at the bottom of the village until you reach an intersection; take a right turn and after approximately 40 minutes you will reach the summit.
At the top a spectacular scene awaits you ; the panoramic views stretches from the Valdorcia across Umbria to Lazio; from Mount Amiata to Lake Bolsena and the Lakes of Chiusi and Montepulciano.
The dense vegetation of the upper slopes is home to many animal species (wild boar, porcupines, roe deer, wood peckers, falcons etc. ).
A curiosity: in medieval times here was the site of the castle of the Manenti family of Sarteano.
If you are a horse lover, Tango and Ginevra are available (advisable only for rides with experience) the stables are only a few kilometres distant.
Day long guided excursions with a picnic lunch can be arranged. For cycling lovers an experienced group of cyclists is on hand the area is full of wonderful surprises. On request we organise excursions with an enviromental guide.
Discover the Giants of the Valdorcia
The discovery of these silent "giants" is a unusual itinerary. The stately and fascinating trees dominating their territories since bygone centuries are awaiting. To admire them is a remarkable experience, they are the most magnificent examples in the whole of the province, and Tuscany.
They offer a truly unique spectacle of majesty and grace.
Definitely a relaxing trip not to be missed. We begin with the one rarest in the farmhouse; a cypress 220 y.o. growing between the Sarteano 1307 village and the Abbey of Spineto of Sarteano; in search of the gentle giants we then move towards Vivo d'Orcia to find a beech 170 y.o., a chestnut 200 y.o. and a maple 270 y.o. Continue our route to Montichiello a hamlet of Pienza precisely at Checche a wonderful sessile oak has been awaiting us for which is 360 y.o. and is affectionately known as "La quercia delle checche".
