Perched on a marine tuff hill, the old village, located in the commune of Palaia, enjoys a magnificent view over the Tuscan hills.
The first news dates back to the year 980 when it was mentioned in the paper archives of the Bishop of Lucca. Subsequently in 1120 the present defensive castle was built at the top of the village. Later the castle became a monastery of the Carthusian monks of Calci.
In the early 2000s, after nearly a thousand years, the Castle underwent an extraordinary restoration under the direction of the Office of Cultural Heritage of Pisa.
